Supermarket – Breadcrumbs Making Navigation Easier
Sweet with a great texture
One good technique for helping Google understand your website is to use breadcrumbs.
Breadcrumbs are the words which are also links which show where you are in a website.
If you click on the link Gala Apples that takes you the Gala Apples Page. But possibly more importantly it shows the options between Supermarket and Gala Apples. This might be useful if you are not 100% sure what you are looking for.
Frequently we search the internet for a solution to a problem. We are not certain what it is we are seeking and but if we look we might find something.
The purpose of these pages are to demonstrate breadcrumbs as a concept, which can be applied to many subjects effectively. The quickest way to see this is to go to Gala Applies and look at the breadcrumbs to that page.
Home > Supermarket > Food > Fresh > Fruit > Apples > Gala Apples
This technique only makes sense if you have a website with a number of pages.. Clearly a 7 page will not need such a structure but you might go.
Admittedly this technique does require more planning and is easier to implement if you are having a re-write of an existing website.
Why bother? if the url structure and the breadcrumbs align that can be tied in with the page Titles this just makes it easier for Google to understand your content.
Most people would never want to get in to such detail as that would imply a huge site but something like this for Aireborough Historical Society can help.
Real World Example Aireborough Historical Society
When Aireborough Historical Society first asked if I could build them a website I did not think they would create more than a handful of pages. How wrong, the site now has over 2000+ pages. As the volume of pages grew it became ever more important to organise the content in some sort of logical way.

Aireborough is a collection of 2 towns Guiseley and Yeadon and 3 villages Rawdon, Carlton and Hawksworth. Located to the west of Leeds and encompass Leeds & Bradford Airport. The industrial heritage of the area stretches back more than 200 years and enjoyed relative prosperity during those times. In the 1930s the largest building in Europe was built secretly to build bombers adjacent to the airport.
How Much Does Google Like Breadcrumbs?
How much does Google like websites to use breadcrumb navigation, can be best seen in a Google Tool known as Search Console which I can configure for your site. This shows a variety of attributes which effectively link to where your site might end up in Google search results. One of the tools in that is Breadcrumbs. If breadcrumbs were irrelevant this would not be a prominent option.
If a page is not indexed in Google it is not going to come up in the results.
It is possible to check a page is indexed in Google and if not I can resubmit it.
The BBC are huge fans of breadcrumb navigation. For a site with a huge amount of content you could not organise it any other way.
Once a site has dozen or more pages then breadcrumb navigation can help users.
