Should You Be Able To Repair Your Washing Machine?

Discover the cost of washing machine components compared to a new washing machine.

One of the great features of YouTube is anyone can upload their content. YouTube does exercise control over what they regard as acceptable. Assuming you are not falling fowl of their rules people can see your content. In this video  Paul Charmbury explains how manufacturers are making it much harder to repair many popular washing machines. In some cases the cost of a new part is almost the same as a brand new washing machine.
Paul suspects that many machines are designed to fail shortly after the warranty runs out. Who could imagine that! With some replacement parts costing almost as much as a new machine it clearly makes more sense in many cases to scrap a machine and buy another.
The real question to ask when buying a new washing machine how much are the components such as:-

  • Drum
  • Motor
  • Bearings
  • The circuit board

Can these be replaced economically?

The same philosophy now applies to cars where headlamp bulbs can now require replacing the whole bulb unit costing in some cases around a £1000. Long gone are the bulbs which were £2.

As long as consumers are kept in the dark until it is too late this will keep happening.

Does the Government care?  – Obviously not as they allow this practice to exist.

Paul is not an impartial observer as he does run a spare parts replacement business called How To Repair but for the more thrifty buyer being able to repair something is a concern.
