People Prefer Humans – AI Use To Help Not Replace Your Voice
I enjoy the rich variety of content on YouTube, real people, real opinions, some I agree with, some I do not. What I have come to realise I would rather listen to an expert in a subject who has learnt to create YouTube videos than a TV personality who knows nothing about the subject and is just reading a script. I do not have problem with a real person stumbling over a word, miss-speaking and then correcting themselves. Passion shines through.
I accept the irony in this – when I asked Google Gemini AI why I hated AI scripts, which are then narrated by AI this is the reply.
Google Gemini
1. “Monotone Dynamism” in Voice Synthesis
Even top-tier AI text-to-speech voices fall into a rhythmic trap. While they don’t sound like monotone robots anymore, they tend to use predictable cadence patterns:
Lack of semantic emphasis: Humans naturally alter speed, pitch, and volume based on why a detail matters. AI voices alter pitch to sound natural, but the variation doesn’t always match the emotional weight of the words.
Missing micro-flaws: Human speech is full of tiny imperfections—micro-pauses, breath catches, slight vocal fries, and subtle shifts in rate of speech when thinking through a point. AI voice tracks strip these out, creating an unnaturally clean “audio uncanny valley.”
2. Formulaic AI Script Writing
AI scriptwriting leaves distinct fingerprints. If you watch a few AI-generated videos, you’ll start recognizing the structural tropes:
Overused transition phrases: Phrases like “In today’s fast-paced world,” “Delve deeper,” “It’s important to note,” or ending every section with “Whether you’re X or Y, Z is key.”
Symmetrical sentence length: Human writers mix short, snappy statements with longer, rolling thoughts. AI models naturally lean toward uniform, medium-length sentences that feel like a continuous conveyor belt of text.
Lack of genuine personal opinion: Human creators include offhand jokes, idiosyncratic takes, or personal anecdotes. AI writing tends to summarize facts neutrally without a distinct human perspective or conviction.
3. Visual and Audio Mismatch
In human-made videos, the timing between what is said and what is shown on screen carries intention and comedic or emotional rhythm. In AI-generated videos, stock footage or AI visuals are often spliced together using generic keyword matching. This leads to visual filler that loosely relates to the script but lacks true narrative pacing.
4. The Parasocial Disconnect
When you watch a video made by a person, you are engaging in a subtle social interaction—you’re evaluating their intent, sincerity, and experience. When you realize a video was script-generated and narrated by an automated loop purely to farm views or clicks, your brain registers it as digital noise rather than a genuine attempt to communicate.
Conclusion – Should You Have A Go Yourself?
Unless it is catastrophically bad you are better off creating your own content. All the top YouTubers started off with no viewers and just kept going until they improved their content and built an audience. Everyone is very self-conscious of their own voice, avoid wind noise and get a microphone. I have seen a client build a business using no-more than videos shot on an iPhone. He has a good personality and has worked very hard to build his butchers business, but he has not used any techniques which are secret, just plugging his product. What holds people back is themselves.
This video has received more than 17,000 views in 2-years. Filmed on a phone. No animals or people were harmed in making this video or going through the house. The occupants were very pleased with the resulting job. A digger like this can do in one day what would take one man 5 days, in not 10-days.
Most people find a picture much easier to absorb information from than text. Having two trolleys of dead flowers outside your store for me sends a very strange message to all those entering. If you cannot water some plants, how can you keep frozen food frozen and chilled food chilled? A brand for me is everything you do, not just the logo, or font.
