Transforming HGV Trailers With Range Energy

Adding A Battery And Electric Motor To HGV Trailers

For a number of years I have wondered why someone has not added a battery and electric moto to HGV trailers?

Ali Javidan – has created a company which has created such a solution and intends to retrofit existing trailers with such a technology.

The pay back for this investment is estimated at 3-years in cash terms and with a powered trailer the HGV can accelerate quicker and going up hills maintain a constant speed, i.e. not slow down. Going down hill the energy from “braking” is used to recharge the battery reducing wear on the brakes and recovering energy which would be turned into heat otherwise.

For me this feels like an idea worth sharing. Hopefully someone in the UK can create a European solution which replicates this idea.

There are an estimated 625,000 HGV trailers in the UK

The estimated life of a typical HGV tractor unit (the part which pulls the trailer) is 10-15 years.

As of 2025 there are 522,000 tractor units in the UK

Clearly a big market and a great opportunity to make the world a cleaner place before all HGVs go electric. For those who think there never will be electric HGVs publishes videos about his journeys around Europe in his electric HGV.
