I invested £2000 in my first proper PC back in December 1995. I sensed that being able to take advantage of the Internet and the new developments in software would be critical for any successful business in the future.
Google had not been born. Downloads took forever, and it was much more expensive to get and remain connected to the World Wide Web.
Being involved in selling print I could see the larger companies switching their spend from ink on paper to a mixture of Internet expenditure and print: -
Print spawned direct mail - or direct marketing about 100 years ago, but it got its big boost in the late 80's and early 90's as the power of computers increased and the costs of data processing fell. It became possible to track the responses from inserts, direct mail, and advertising by coding them and then working out which adverts pulled best. From there it became possible to refine ones marketing.
The Internet is direct marketing on steroids
The Internet is really only an extension of the direct marketing ideas of the past speeded up and made more direct.
Most businesses are hardly even scratching the surface, and that is not surprising.
My first experience of using a computer at Bradford University Management Centre in Emm Lane was way back in the early 1980's. When typing, a daisy wheel struck the roll of paper in front. Some of the more advanced terminals had black and white screens and it was all very primitive, by today's standards.
Email had not been invented, nor the World Wide Web - the changes since the early 1990's have been extraordinary, but it is not too late to get on board.
It is not too late to get involved...
The true potential of the Internet is just beginning to be realised and for those companies willing to get involved quick progress can be made. Google was not the first search engine. Firms that are top of the search engine pile this month can be knocked off in the future.
Whilst my ideas and strategies will work for larger companies I find that the smaller company are quicker to embrace change, they are more open to try ideas and not stuck in a rut unable to make decisions because there is no one charged with that area of responsibility.
