Should I Have A Links Page On My Website? - No!

If only all questions could be as easy to answer as should I have a links page on my website? And the answer is an emphatic NO! Links should flow naturally through your website from one page on your website to another or to an external website where appropriate but having a page of links was a popular idea in the early days of the web.

With hindsight it was not really a good idea then and it certainly is not a good idea now.

Essentially links should be thought of in a similar way to references in an academic style article where you reference other people to justify your comments and thoughts.

That is where Larry Page co-founder of Google came up with the idea of PageRank. There has been a lot written about PageRank and if this is a new idea to you then to keep it simple just try and get as many links from other people's websites to yours as possible.

However all links are not of equal value. Google does not approve of buying links so think twice before buying from someone who has sold a large number of links from their website to other peoples.

The sites with the most traffic have the most links to them as a rule of thumb.

If your site has no links then 1 is a good start and from 1 to 10 is an increase of 1000% from 10 to 30 will make a good difference.

I am amazed that most people who have websites ignore or reject this advice, mainly because it does take a considerable effort to generate a sensible links programme, but this will make a considerable difference to your internet presence if you do have in-bound links to your website. Better still the effect lasts. If your site is perceived as important by others, so you will find people you have never met, or heard of, adding links to your site without your knowledge but to your benefit.

Backlinks > Competitor Analysis

Curious to know who your competitors have links from? can supply the answer. There are literally millions of websites with billions of links and  analysis of your competitors can point you to resources which you might not be aware of.

Links are crucial in just the same way personal contacts can be critical to success, if you are not up to speed why not contact

Twitter is a great way to create links especially if you use to create your Tweets because that enables you to create links very easily.

So if you have dismissed Twitter take a second look with the thought of links in your mind.
